Socratic
with Kevin Bryan
Stephanie: State your name & what you do in the band.
Kevin: KEVIN! I play guitar and sing mostly back ups. On occasion I take
the lead, not too often though.
Stephanie: Your debut album "Lunch For The Sky" is almost out
now. What was the writing process like for this?
Kevin: Hmmm. The writing was long and slow. We started writing the album
as far back as 2003. We wrote over 20 songs, recorded most of them at sometime
or another; most songs we recorded and demo-ed a few times. We all write songs.
Usually Duane, Vinny, or I will begin a song, and bring it to the other four
members and finish it together.
Stephanie: On that same note, how was the recording process?
Kevin: Recording was fun. REAL FUN. We recorded at Longview Farms in Mass.
We recorded in the "Farmhouse". Basically, the studio is in the
house. We were allowed to play whenever we wished through the night etc..
Every morning we would wake up, eat breakfast and start tracking till dinner,
then track some more after. We all had our own room, had wonderful food cooked
for us, had horses to ride.....it was so pleasant. John Goodmanson, our producer,
was outstanding and a joy to work with. He really understood what we wanted
to do and made it all happen. He also kept us in line. We are real A.D.D.
Stephanie: Do you feel this album will really make a name for you &
restore people's faith with DriveThru?
Kevin: Well, I hope it makes a name for us. I hope it makes the biggest
impact it can on the music scene as possible, and if that reflects good on
Drive Thru, that's great. But, I feel anyone who lost faith in Drive Thru
for some reason or another needs to rethink their view. Drive Thru since the
beginning has taken risks and done things that not everyone has understood,..
but have always come out on top. There is no reason for myself or anyone else
to doubt their thinking or business execution now. They'll just prove you
wrong. Hopefully we are a part of that.
Stephanie: Why did you decide to make "Lunch For The Sky" the
title track?
Kevin: Listen to the album...
Stephanie: For you personally, what is your favorite part about the album?
Certain lyrics, music, etc?
Kevin: Hmmmm, well I like it all. I like both slow jams. I am also a fan
of well...everything.
Stephanie: Do your parents support your band a lot? Have they helped in
any way with your careers?
Kevin: All our parents are supportive. But since I am doing this interview
I'll talk about mine. My parents have hardly ever missed a NJ or NY show,
spent endless amounts of money on us... even helped us purchase our first
van. Socratic would not be a band right now if it weren't for a few people,
and my immediate family are definitely some of the people.
Stephanie: Where would you say are your favorite places to play? (States
& venues)
Kevin: HAHA well I'm just going to list places, states & venues we've
had good experiences. So if i don't list a city, I would please ask any residents
of the cities not listed to come to the show and rock out with us so next
time I can add the city.
New Jersey (Countless Venues), NY (The Downtown, The CMJ shows, The Continental),
CT (Empress Ballroom), MA (Axis), MI, Iowa (Gabes Oasis), CA (Chain Reaction)
Stephanie: Describe each of the band members in 5 words or less.
Kevin: Tom- Smart and a great cook.
Duane- Has a way with words.
Vinny- Spiritual and knowledge seeking.
Adam- Funny and loveable my home movie date.
Stephanie: What'is touring with Socratic like? What's a typical day?
Kevin: Well, we have our favorite activities. Then we play a show, hang
out, laugh, maybe fight a little amongst ourselves, make up, eat together
and get a hotel. Do it again.
Stephanie: What are some of your favorite bands?
Kevin: Well I'll try and list the major favs The Beatles, Pink Floyd,
Tom Petty...ehhh so much ....
Radiohead, The Shins, The Doves, Midtown, Fenix TX, Guns N Roses, The Get
Up Kids.
Stephanie: What bands would you say influenced you the most while making
"Lunch For The Sky"?
Kevin: Nirvana- and what I believe we took from that band is not necessarily
a sound which is obvious. Bit the sincerity that band has and promotes is
so abundant; I think we stole some of that. We tried to do our own thing regardless
of what may have happened.
Stephanie: What do you think about PunkRockMom, PRD (Angela) & PRS
(Stephanie)?
Kevin: Those three ladies are a class act.
Stephanie: What do you want everyone to know about Socratic? What is the
one thing everyone should know about the band?
Kevin: We did this album and really tried to do it well. This is us, this
is the music we write, like it or not. We try hard and I hope it shows.
Stephanie: If you were a piñata, what shape would you be and what
would you be filled with?
Kevin: I would be a Pink Elephant.
Stephanie: If/when you have a headlining tour, what bands would you want
to bring out with you?
Kevin: hmmmmmmmm I love Tourmaline, The Bank Robbers, The Showcase, Kick
Over the Traces and I think after we become the biggest band in the world
we will take Coldplay on tour. JK I'm an asshole.
Stephanie: Any last thoughts?
Kevin: Hamburgoa in Kearny New Jersey is tasty.
